My late wife killed herself by a GSW to the chest. She struggled for years with mental illness and her friends cared about her deeply and supported her any way they could.

After the funeral, one of her BFFs and I were talking about how hard she fought her illness and her buddy said to me "Well, she gave it her best shot."

She, of course, was horrified but we then both just laughed that embarrassed, nervous laughter. She meant well.

What are you gonna do?

The war is over for me now. But those of us who did make it have an obligation to build again, to teach to others what we know, and to try with what's left of our lives to find a goodness and a meaning to this life.
