Title: Three good things
Post by: sphoc on March 09, 2015, 08:43:16 AM
Because we need a three good things thread, right @helen?

1) The inspection for my house went well on Saturday - it looks like things are moving forward for my home purchase! Yay me for doing this on my own  :D

2) Yay to all the wonderful folks who've worked so hard to get a new forum set up. It won't be without its humps and hiccups, but that's always the way with change, isn't it?

3) In less than two weeks, I get to travel across the pond again and spend time with some wonderful folks, and I'm just so excited to be going to the UK under happier circumstances this time.

1) Yesterday was the fifth anniversary of Rich's death. It felt like it was going to be a big, scary thing. It wasn't. I didn't live the timeclock of events in my head. It was a "normal" day.

2) I've been approved for services by the Florida Division of Blind Services and hopefully will see my trainer this week. As I lose my sight, I am seeing life so much more clearly!

3) As I work here in "my" room, my new husband is in the other room grousing about his internet connection (he works from home). It is such a normal, every day sound. I love it (not that the internet is temperamental, just the simplicity of such problems!).

4) Can I cheat and do one more?  I wasn't really faithful at YWBB the last year or so. I'm grateful to have an opportunity to rekindle old friendships and make new ones here!

1) It's finally warming up in Atlanta - the dog and I are both ready for springtime and longer walks outside!

2) The seller has agreed to the repairs I requested on the house and I managed to find reasonably-priced homeowner's insurance - things are progressing on this house purchase stuff (exciting but so stressful at the same time!).

3) I have book club tonight and the book we read was set in Maine and has me feeling nostalgic in a good way.

The original post was started on the 15th October 2012 and for so long it was part of my healing process. I am so grateful to those who joined me on this part of my journey with 2198 posts altogether, which I make as over 6000 good things.

This was my 1st post:

I am a mum to 5 teenagers and a teacher, living in beautiful Scotland. My lovely husband died this summer.

One of the ways I am getting through is to try and pick the things out of each day that I am incredibly grateful for, I try to get 3 every day, it does not always work though. I will try and keep posting mine and maybe others can join me.

1. Child #5 came home safely from visiting a friend, she had been gone for a week and I missed her lots. She is great company I realise.

2. I did eventually get to sleep at 6am and got a whole 4 hours, I was very grateful it was Sunday today.

3. It was cold outside and when we got home the house was lovely and warm.

My own favourite post was on the 15th September 2013, I remember it so well!

1. I had the most amazing weekend ever.

2. See above.

3. See above.

My favourite post from someone else who may like to remain nameless but I know who it was:

1. Umm @#$%^
2. Ooops, we are just friends?!?!
3. M effing sexy naked! OMG what have I done????!

thanks all <3

Hard couple of days for me so I need to revisit this thread.

I've never posted on here because I always say nothing is good.  But I'm going to really try.

Carey, it can be really tough to come up with three good things some days, but it really helps even when they are the litttlest things. I know I'm struggling with this, too, but here are my three for today:

1) Met my next door neighbors last night - they are quite lovely people.
2) Went out for Indian food last night with a friend I hadn't seen in a while - it was good to catch up.
3) I was in bed by 10pm last night and slept all night - it's been a while since I've managed that!

1) Had Sonic lunch with a friend so I have a lovely route 44 cherry limeade here on my desk
2) It's finally a warm SUNNY day
3) Holding out hope I might can go to the beach for the day Saturday. I NEEEEEED that so much.

I don't think I've ever posted here before, but today I feel like being positive.  There seems to be so much sadness lately that I want to highlight some good things to add some balance and help me stay focused on possibilities.  Here goes:

1.  A widower friend I came to know through YWBB, with whom I spent hours talking last year when we were both at fairly low points...he messaged me last night that he is now engaged to a wonderful widow.  Go dsb!  I've enjoyed following his connection to his new love.

2.  I'm getting myself ready for a summer road trip again.  This time, I will have my 14 year-old niece with me and we will head west.

3.  I'm having lunch with a local friend today that is relatively young and also widowed.

Anyone else?

Maureen

1.  Reached my goal weight today.  (6 months of portion control)
2.  Received a promising offer on my house.
3.  FIL commented to me at reunion yesterday that the man I have been getting to know was a class act with core values and a man's man.  Don't know if that should be mentioned on here but it sure validated what I am seeing in him.

I am going to bump this after reading another post, today was a lovely day then stuff went wrong this evening and left my daughter and I both in tears. Focusing on the good in the middle of the crap was always the intention of this thread.

1. This was the end of my 1st full week in my new job which seems wonderful, it's in the middle of the city, in a wonderful school, my room has a view of Carlton Hill in Edinburgh (gorgeous)  and all of the people have been great.

2. Stayed in Edinburgh after work today and had a lovely time with child #5, ate tapas, watched a couple of shows in the Festival.

3. Home and read the comments here about this thread and honestly I had no idea this thread had been so positive for some of you, maybe I did something right these last three years and didn't mess everything up entirely. You made me smile on a dark evening.

1) I am happy to see this thread make its way to the top of the list, once again.
2) I feel like I am starting to make friends, and not just acquaintances, at the new school where I work.
3) I haven't said much about this, other than here, but I have been really, REALLY struggling to make it financially, until I get my first paycheck at my new job (which isn't until October 1st). I don't know if New Guy mentioned to his mom that I am struggling (which I doubt), or if she just thought that having to go so long without a paycheck might be hard (more likely); but she just did the nicest thing for me. New Guy sent me a text today around lunchtime today, telling me his mom had bought me a $50 gift card for the local grocery store. I cannot tell you how touched I am or what a blessing it was to get the gift card.

Today is my 2 year Sadiversary, I need to focus on some positives because the negatives are all too obvious.

1. A beautiful, sunny early fall day

2. Nice lunch at one of Tim's favorite local places with his family after Mass.

3. Several people remembering the significance of the day in special ways

Tis a tough day for me as I'm having to take on the responsibility of making major medical decisions for my grandmother's care and flying out to Malaysia all of a sudden.  It's also widow bestie's sadniversary this week.  So to keep my spirits up:

1) At least I'm old enough and financially stable enough to be able to go and see my grandmother
2) I got a new mindfulness colouring book and I find it really calming
3) I have a widow bestie and a whole widowed community who are more loyal than I could ever have hoped for.  Thank you

When I started this thread on the other forums years ago now it really helped my through those early tough days. Life has been unbelievably tough again this year and fighting to remain afloat has become a very difficult battle. I am still fighting though and so one of my weapons is going to be returning to this thread and trying to be grateful again for three things each day for a little while. I know I have much to be thankful for.

1. The tree is up, the presents bought and wrapped, the food shopping ordered. Christmas is pretty much sorted.

2. Three friends reached out to me today as they knew I was struggling. I am so very grateful to those who have not given up on me.

3. I made myself roasted cauliflower this evening and it was delicious.

2.  Attended church with my family this morning and allowed by heart to be open to God's word and reliving the birth of Jesus.
3.  Gifts are bought and wrapped, cookies and candy made, and my credit card balance is $0.

So I went intending to loose 40$; well I lost 38.00; and was getting rid of the last 2 dollars when the slot machine made a noise, hit 777 and paid out 465.50 \(^o^)/ .

1. Took both daughters to brunch and a holiday theatre matinee performance.  We are going to make this a yearly tradition.
2.  Stores are open 24 hours so I shopped at midnight on Friday with no crowds and finished my shopping.  I was able to get a present gift wrapped for free at one store so less to wrap.
3.  Spent 5 hours Saturday reconnecting with a high school classmate who lives near my new home.  She grew up with Dan so it was fabulous to reminisce.

Best thread!

1) I managed to put up and take down a Christmas tree by 12/20 and pull off history's lamest story as to why Santa came last night (see below).

2) We are leaving for 2 weeks in England tomorrow with adp and his family, new traditions!

3) And of course, you all.  What in the #$%^&*  would I have done and do without you all these past three years?  I marvel.  I told my father in law, also a widower, about you all on Saturday and he teared up.  Not sure why but I'm sure in part that he was grateful I found a community to help me through.  I'm grateful for him, too.  He gets it.  Anyway....

Happy new year!

1. Christmas program at church for the kids 11 and under. So sweet! It was my day to volunteer in the 2nd and 3rd graders room. I escorted the kids to the stage in the sanctuary. Then helped give their lesson afterwards. My daughter looks forward to me being in her room.

2. Talked to a friend I haven't talked to in awhile.  Nice catching up with him.

3. Best part of my day was hearing another friend tell me his cancer cell count was really low.  He has multiple myeloma. He's eager to get through his next round of chemo.  I'm getting together a care package for him from multiple friends that I plan on delivering this week. People are making meals to freeze, sweets, a cheese ball, dips, and I'm going to pick up some gift cards. He's a great guy and was my husbands best friend in school,  2nd grade through senior year.  He's been through a lot.  Before being diagnosed he had a work related accident,  several reconstructive surgeries, and then a divorce.  His wife left when he was diagnosed.

1. My new job is in a pretty posh school and it had not occurred to me before today what that would mean for Christmas gifts for the teacher! Wow, I have not opened them yet and maybe some are just crap in designer bags but I don't think so!

2. The view from my classroom window this morning was spectacular, I can't share it as I am posting from my phone this evening but the sunrise over Calton Hill in Edinburgh was glorious.

3. Went out this evening to a noodle bar with a lovely friend, she lets me feel sorry for myself just the right amount before stopping me.

Christmas Eve 11pm and Santa has been!

1. Some of the kids and I went to do an 'escape challenge' in Edinburgh, we had an hour to get out of Di Vinci themed room. It took us 49 minutes and was huge fun.

3. Santa has been, most people are asleep and the house is quietish. Lots of presents as there are 9 of us here this evening.

1. The kids staying here slept until 8.15 which was pretty miraculous. We all got a good nights sleep.

2. Lots of lovely presents including a Fitbit and a lovely vegan cookbook.

3. I made delicious food, lots of laughing and happy people. I am very blessed to have so many children and friends.

1.  Difficult to limit all the good things of the last days to 3.  Family and friends spending time together heads the list.
2.  A full week of no school and time to just hang out.
3.  It's the day after Christmas and not one exchange to be made and I don't need to face a store today.

Struggling hard today to keep afloat. My mood is an unpredictable as the Scottish weather. Being a single parent is an unrelenting, thankless task, even when the children are older as mine are, they have such high expectations and I am a limited resource. Focusing on the good things is like clinging to a life raft in a storm.

1. I slept brilliantly, waking at 9.15am which must have happened a handful of times this century.

2. We headed to the theatre this afternoon for our annual trip to the pantomime which was as funny as always, maybe this will be the last year though, maybe time for a new Boxing Day tradition next year.

3. Managed to hold it together (just) when I wanted to fall apart. The lure of the nut roast left overs held things in balance.

2. After church we all went to see Daddy's Home.  Good movie!  The ending was perfect.

3. After the movie we went to a local Mexican restaurant for a late lunch. Fun day!

4. I'll add another.  I've been texting with a guy friend since we got home.

2. Sat and watched the final Downton Abbey this afternoon, curled up on the sofa, with no feelings of guilt for doing nothing.

3. Went to the cinema last night to see 'Sisters' which was very rude but also very funny.

This Christmas, we changed it up yet again!  Out of fear of pain, we have changed it up quite a bit.  Last year, the house was so festive!  I got a baby tree to place in the family room and my DD wanted to stay home.  We opened presents Christmas morning and then I took a prime rib to the cousins.  This year, we went to my cousin's Christmas Eve (I won't tell you about the craptastic afternoon) after letting go a small hurt (after all - it's all small in comparison to the big hurt).  Again we opened Christmas gifts Christmas morning and headed into Seattle to spend the next two days.

I am so grateful:
1.  For this beautiful, big hearted kid of mine - she and I are on this journey together
2.  Being able to spend the two days with my DD and pups at a pet friendly hotel and city
3.  The sweet server at the Irish pub, Sinead - she was a dear and gave me a hug when we left

1. Packed up Christmas decorations.

2. Cleaned house, worked on laundry.

3. Made a birthday dinner and dessert for my 14yo daughter. We're meeting family at the restaurant of her choice on her birthday,  the 29th.

Icy roads, so we were stuck at home today.

1. Got a new tattoo after searching for the perfect artist for five years. It didn't hurt anywhere near as much as I remembered my first one hurting. Guess our pain thresholds as widows are extremely high!

2. Played my childhood piano into the wee hours last night. Many songs from musicals that make me happy.

3. Finally had the privacy for a good cry (after almost a week of being stuck with small children and family)

1.  Shopping and lunch day with Mom, her sister, and friend.
2.  Boys day for Dad, uncle, and my boys.
3.  Slept soundly for 8 hrs. last night.  Feeling great today.

1. Started the day at the gym, weights and then a swim, sauna and jacuzzi.

2. Got lots of recycling done. I am moving in May to a new home right in the middle of the city, it is being built just now and I am pretty excited about it but am taking the opportunity to get rid of lots of clutter. Today I managed to sort all the photos without crying. I also took lots of stuff to be recycled which always feels good.

It's going to look like this. I am leaving my large family house on the edge of the city for a gorgeous apartment right in the centre, huge move for me (as I am sure you all can understand) and life will be very different, but I hope in a good way.

3. Worked this evening (sad but true) and got lots of my planning done for next term as well as writing some social stories, finishing IEPs and printing child friendly target sheets, designing a form and completing a maths assessment exemplar for a course. I always work best when I have a clear list and focus on one job at a time and tonight I crossed loads off my list. Next term is going to be a busy one as I am leading some training sessions and need to get these all sorted too this week.

1.  Boys finished their Christmas thank you notes with very little prompting this year.  In the mail.
2.  Minimalism is reaping benefits with amount of house cleaning.  Closets hold everything and clutter is gone.
3.  New Year's Eve buffet and family sports activities planned at church.  Happy kids - Happy Momma.
Title: Re: Three good things

Minimalism is on my agenda too mmg, for me the possessions have so little value now, I know for others the opposite is true.

1. I again spent a chunk of the day clearing out things. Since Graham died 3 and a half years ago now, a half eaten bar of his favourite chocolate has remained in his bedside cabinet. It was time to throw it out and it's now gone.

2. Headed into Edinburgh this evening for some Turkish food with friends, they did a mezze meal and the starter selection would have been enough without the mains. Wonderful food.

3. The same friends and I went to see some hip-hop improvisation after eating, the trio were genius.

Tomorrow is a huge day for me and I am facing the biggest of all of my demons. After so many years of hosting a Hogmanay party and always having a houseful of people I will be alone for 'the bells'. Being alone has been the thing I have found toughest of all as a widow, being alone on Hogmanay would be a huge deal for anyone Scottish. It will be a huge test of character. My survival record so far is impeccable, all passes with no fail and tomorrow is just another day to get through.

1. I only have to work a half day at work today and it is sloooooooooow.
2. It is looking probable that some time after the new year I will move into a new position within my department that takes me out of the daily grind and allows me to focus more on big picture development for the team, which I am more passionate about.
3. I went to the zoo yesterday with Justin and his DD. We had a great time. :)

Love love the tattoo Grace. Foxscript eh, smart.

Yesterday:

1. Started the day with a massage and facial, it was pretty wonderful. The girl who did this for me I had not seen for three years, but for about 3 months over the period Graham died I went to see her every week. I must go again soon.

2. Friend for lunch, she made a lovely healthy vegan mean which was delicious.

3. Yoga in the evening.

Today:

1. First day back at work, but without kids today so lots of time to make resources and get sorting done. There was a child protection course too which was not too painful.

2. Body Pump and a swim and sauna after work, makes me feel great.

3. Decided to go on a vegan/yoga retreat in February and I think I found something that works this evening. I became vegan last year after being vegetarian all my life and love it.

2.Today I've managed to stay pretty positive & that's a genuinely difficult task currently (circumstances).

2. Prepared some training I have to deliver at work this afternoon, think it's going to be fine. I can do grown up sometimes,

3. One of my friend's sister was murdered last night, a knife attack, awful stuff. I am grateful all my family are safe and well this evening, although that feels a little selfish it is about the only positive third thing I can add.

1. We had a really nice 9th birthday party for my daughter and her 5 best pals at their favorite Chinese place last night.  I got to catch up with the two couples who've held us close and who I hadn't seen since Halloween.

2. My research project, now many years and much heart ache  in the making, is set to launch its long promised online database by the end of the month, in truncated form, but it feels good to know that we've made it happen after everything we've both been through, my research partner and I.

3.  My Dad came over and changed all of the burnt out lightbulbs I couldn't reach, fixed my bike and moved some furniture.  Funny how getting someone over here to accomplish those little nuisances is huge.

and just cuz,

4.  I'm baking bread tonight which always makes me feel better.

Lots of love.

1. Dreams of my wonderful Ronnie.  Last night was kind of unusual.  I thought in my dream "I know this can't be real" and then I made the decision inside my dream to not it mention to dream Ronnie because it would ruin the nice time we were having.  I even said to him in the dream "It was so nice spending this time with you."

2. Dreams of the future.  I am just now able to think of things I may want for myself.  I wouldn't call it hope, but just that I can appreciate anything enough to want it is great.

3. Fantasy dreams.  Winning the lottery, great books and TV, escapism can be good and is occasionally much needed.

1. My Sailor called tonight and is now safely back at San Diego Naval Station for (the Navy says) at least a few months. I'll be breathing a bit easier.

2. My wife's learned today her illness is currently in remission. She is still sicker than hell but it isn't getting any worse - at least for now. A small victory but still, a victory.

3. I successful fought my sparring partner to a draw today during an exhibition. She, yes 'she' and I'll thank you to not snicker, outweighs me by 50 pounds, is 6 inches taller than me and is rated a full two levels above my level. During the early portion of the competition, she was kicking me so hard that I was flying into the air. I feel like someone beat me with a shovel.

1. Gym and swim today, worked hard which always helps a little.

2. A guy came to sign off some building completion certificates, paperwork that Graham had not completed in 2005 and 2007 when we had two extensions to the house. The guy was lovely and signed them both off, I just need an electrician now to check that's all fine.

I've always loved this thread (thank you Chemie/Helen) and it's been awhile since I've participated...

1.  Earlier this week I ate dinner with a lovely wid that I first met on YWBB.  We had such a great night and it reminded me of how lucky I am to have this place. A little over four years later and we are both doing well.  Still miss our DH's but understand that will always be part of who we are.

2.  Even though I've been sick I am getting my training back on track.  Pushing through when you aren't feeling up to it is hard but so rewarding.

3.  I tend to be hard on myself but somehow was reminded that I do what I can do and that's enough.  It may not be what I think I should do, my house may not always be presentable to visitors, etc.  but I wake up each day ready to go and go to bed each night knowing I did the best I could that day and that is an accomplishment.

1)  I had a tree taken down in the back yard.  Tree guy said the clean up would be the expensive part, so Consort and I had at it this morning and made a dent in the tree debris.

2) the drain in the upstairs tub deteriorated.  Handy man said he'd never seen that happen.  We tried to screw the new one in, but couldn't get it to "catch" the female portion of the drain.  I slid a hose clamp under the pipe, and over a dowel across the opening handyman left for access to the plumbing, and tightened the screw. At that point the male and female portions of the drain could do what males and females do. We now have a functional upstairs tub.

3) Summer weather has come to Maine.

Today marks the 3 months mark since Jenny passed.
I can't say it was a good day, but I got through it.
M three positive things from today:

1. My daughters hugs and telling me she loves me.

2. Cooking dinner together with my girl...she set the table, poured the milk,  put the salad in bowls, and stirred the spaghetti in the pot so it wouldn't stick.

3. Someone anonymously left a bag on my door step with fresh vegetables in it.
And a note that said " Fresh from my garden".

My daughter discovered how to squeal with delight. It was this very loud high pitch noise that she made today for the very first time, liked it herself so much, that she continued to repeat it time after time, laughing. It was so contagious, that I also laughed. This seems liked the first time I actually felt a moment full of joy!

I am writing in this section of the forum, which means I am searching for the good things in life again, and that is a good thing in itself, I think...?

That's it, just those two at the moment...

2.  My bf works 2nd shift and sleeps late, but while he was asleep I went to Lowe's and got more landacape fabric and staples.  I was working in the yard before he even woke up.  :)

1. It is a beautiful cool, sunny day and- thanks to modern technology- I am on the porch enjoying it while also on the Internet! Yes, I know, I should be weeding instead...

2. I spent yesterday with an old friend I haven't seen for several years. It was really lovely spending time with her and her young son.

2. I found the ring I lost earlier this week. It's not fancy, just a simple silver ring I bought myself recently and somehow it had fallen off and disappeared.
3. Realizing one of the "good" things about being alone is that when I'm singing out loud to the car radio, no one cares that I only know half the words! And, yes, as this thought crossed my mind, it made me smile rather than cry.

Friday was our wedding anniversary and no celebration of Father's Day today since husband, father, and FIL have all passed. BUT, it's been a good weekend and I thought I'd capture this moment in time:

1. Went to my niece's spaghetti dinner fundraiser Friday night (good aunt that I am!). On the way home, I took a wrong turn which meant our drive home was a bit out the way. At a stop sign, a woman got out of her car to ask for directions. She was totally lost and flustered and if I hadn't taken the "long" way home, I wouldn't have been there to help her at that moment.

2. Went to Sail Boston on Saturday and my son decided to join me at the last minute. It was a great day being on the water watching the tall ships and we then we enjoyed a casual, relaxing late lunch together.

3. An impromptu invitation to see a drum corp performance last night. My first (in person) and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

So a weekend that started with a funeral on my anniversary, has turned out pretty darn good! Of course, I still need to get through today, hence, capturing the moment and good feeling while it lasts!

1. Though we got a late start, the garden has been giving us plenty of food to eat and give away.

2. Captured/released two bees from my house this morning so they can continue to go forth and pollinate.

3. The new squirrel triplets in my front tree are very rambunctious and a bit on the destructive side, but they sure are cute to watch.

Worst mood ever lately.  Maybe this will help...

1) My garden is still somehow producing even in November.  Cabbage, brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli and collards!

2) Taking our 11 year old down to Philly tonight to see our longtime favorite singer-songwriter, Josh Ritter, and have dinner with one of my favorite former students from the early 2000s.   Grateful my daughter still wants to hang out with me! For now...

3) There are 4.5 weeks left in this miserable semester at my miserable job (ok, misery isn't really a good thing but a break from it in 4.5 weeks is).

1. My home was filled with company, laughter, and love yesterday at our Bago.

2. I've made such dear, close friends on this journey and through this board and their kindness, support, and love was felt so strongly yesterday. I appreciate everyone who made the trip and just wish we all lived closer.

3. The reminders of the day still warm my heart and make me smile this morning. I hope the hugs hold me over until the next one.
