  1. I have no advice to give but just wanted to say I understand the problems with the academic life (UK academic here). From what I understand of the US process, it's fantastic that Andy is in the running! All I can say, and I certainly don't mean this to sound blunt but words are not working for me this evening, Andy moved from the UK to the USA to be with you and M, yes? I, personally, think that's an incredibly brave and courageous thing to have done. I wish you all the best wishes I can for the future and know you will come to the best decision for you. x
  2. I've just realised I didn't add to this thread when it first appeared *shame on me* I'm in Scotland (about an hour south of Helen) but I was born in the city in which she lives. I agree, it's one of the most beautiful cities on Earth 8)
  3. Another one with a magazine still getting delivered 2.5 years later. I also hoovered out his car for the first time since he died. He would have been horrified at the state of it. My excuse? It was never my job to clean the cars!
  4. My fridge is surprisingly, actually astoundingly, clean. Although, I do have some sweet potatoes lurking at the bottom of the vegetable drawer that I keep forgetting to use! By beloved OH would be gobsmacked at my ongoing domestication. That should tell you how domestic I am ....
  5. I am in awe of the window cleaners here! Window cleaning wasn't my job (nor the ironing ... I'm happy with wrinkled clothes) so they haven't been done in nearly two and a half years. There are horse prints on the outside of some windows and dog prints on the inside of others. Am I a totally slovenly person or does the fact my cooker is clean redeem me?
  6. It's someone like you on the YWBB, who quoted the dictionary definition to me to tell me my feelings of devastation were not valid, who stopped me posting on there. It's sad to see that this has travelled over to here as well. No wonder some of us don't post very often.
  7. It's amazing how much anonymity you can find in Glasgow. Oh, and Edinburgh is where the brothels are; Glasgow has enthusiastic amateurs 😉 I wish you luck.
  8. I don't post very often, being one of those who likes to stand on the sidelines and watch, and have no preference for or against the 'like' button. I just wanted to a that I love the fact we have a Wadmin for our admin! 😄
  9. Glad to see you back, AC! *hugs*
  10. My apologies for being blunt in my reply, I'm afraid I have a headache and am not functioning properly but needed to ask ... You have built up friendships with people on here through shared experiences, and you genuinely care for them as friends (older friends and new friends who join us here). You want to stay in touch and support others who join. I can see how New Guy may feel like he is competing with Kenneth but the fact is - Kenneth is not here, he is - and there is no competition to fight. To be honest, I view anybody who tells you who you are allowed as friends to be controlling and potentially emotionally manipulative. If you made widow friends in real-life rather than online, would he be trying to stop you going for coffee with them? Does he really understand how manipulative and controlling he is being, by deciding who you are allowed to be friends with? Just my opinion, of course, and it's entirely possible he would be horrified to think that's how he was behaving. I just have a severe dislike of emotional manipulation. Others are always welcome to disagree with me and I look forward to the other replies.
  11. Would anybody care to explain to a Scot what a Philly cheese steak is?
  12. I'm 18 months out and the grand total of what I have given away is: One filter coffee machine ... I don't drink coffee so decided it should be rehomed to my stepfather One chainsaw ... scared the whatsits out of me so gave it to BiL (OH's sisters husband) Some specialist tools ... same home as the chainsaw Six ring gas hob ... went to my Aunt And that's it. Just as well my house is big enough to not need to go through things. I'm now ready to allow people to go through his fleeces to see if they want them for golfing fleeces, etc. The suitable T-shirts I'm keeping for me. The shirts are being kept to be made into a blanket for me. Undies and socks are being used for stuffing draught excluders. The rest will either be charity (if good enough) or bin. Of course, I haven't actually carried through with any of this yet.
  13. OK, what exactly is a PEEP? I'm assuming chocolate of some kind? *confused of the UK*
  14. I now have to go and check what this means! *smm toddles off to find out*
