I lost my job today

Things in my office have ben going downhill for awhile now and today I was let go.  I worked for a behavioral health group that hasn't performed very well since its inception, due to many issues beyond my control.  I admit that I was not the best employee but I have a good work ethic and showed up every day even when I was very ill.  Management offered me a severance agreement this afternoon to 'resign' effective September 7th and just move on.   Management - Vice President - stated that they would give a me good referral when other employers call about me, saying that "I have moved on to bigger and better things".  That is a good deal now that I write this, but it is just the shock of losing a job.  My background is in insurance and healthcare billing.  Can I have some encouragement, please.

Hi, Roosy,

I am sorry you are left in this unsettling predicament. It has to hurt - regardless of the circumstances. However, if you look at the bigger picture, this employment situation certainly wasn’t feeding your soul in many ways.

This is is the time when you get to frame your forward movement. You now have the time to seek a position that serves you better. This may (or may not) take some time, but I’m hoping that you will find yourself in a position that utilizes your skills and talents and benefits you on personal and professional levels. If you are going to prepare for interviews, get your rhetoric down and move forward with confidence. You wanted to be in a more compatible position and decided to take the steps needed to find better opportunities.

Hang in there!

Maureen

Thank you, Maureen.  With the way things were going at work, I didn't think the company would be around in a year or two anyway.  Our lead psychologist was blaming me for every mistake that his staff members made, so I definitely won't miss that.  Our director of the ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) department was telling our new parents fullsizeoutput_76c.jpeg.1b19dd5963ed3f108004adc91701d9b3.jpegto pay what they could on their account balances and the rest would be written off, then got upset when none of the parents were paying.  I was told today that other people would also be let go so I think this is more of a layoff situation more than anything else.  My sons' SSI payments will end in 3-5 years as well so I was already considering a change because my income would drop significantly with the SSI loss - wanted to be in front of it rather than behind.   I have found a few business magazine articles on how to handle the unemployment and use my LinkedIn account to find a job.  My SIL works at the local Children's Hospital so I will apply there as well.

So sorry to hear this  rooshy. Just remember when these people are pointing their fingers at others they have 3 pointing back at themselves!

Thank you, sudnlysngl.  You're right, management will have no one to blame but themselves when things settle down.  Both the vice president and my supervisor said that I was a nice person with a great work ethic but the quality wasn't there - when an employee is pulled in 30 different directions like I was, no, the work results will not be good.  They both stated they would give a good report when other employers call about me.  At least I am out on somewhat 'good' terms.

I'm sorry you were forced out of your position before having a plan for what comes next.  As scary as it may seem it sounds like you are really ready for a change.  There is a better job out there for you that you can shine in and I wish you all of the best in finding it!  Take advantage of the positive reference your employer will give you and be confident in the skills you have to offer, better opportunities are on the horizon.

Thank you, Trying.  This morning I went for the last of my things from the office.  I also turned in my severance agreement, so things are 'final', but my work email account (I had it on my iPhone) wasn't turned off until this afternoon.  I feel like I really screwed this up and lost the job but at the same time, as I was talking with my now former supervisor, no departments talk to one another and each one is led by an egocentric person.  Some of the directors really did act like the company revolved around them and I think that's a big reason why the company is hemorrhaging money.  I just didn't;twant to leave on these terms.  Thanks for reading my rambling🙃

So sorry to hear Rooshy. As a business consultant, I would say this business is in serious trouble. Like you said, you didn't expect them to be around another year. I bet you are going to be right. Although this is a disappointment for you, it may well be a blessing in disguise. It doesn't look like one and it doesn't feel like one yet it left an open door for you to walk through. You mention your background is in insurance and healthcare billing. Isn't there a big demand for that skill? Another avenue is to work for one of the state disability nonprofit providers. They bill medicaid and the state to get reimbursed for delivering services such as community habilitation, respite, behavior support, etc. Hang in there. It wasn't you, it was them. You will find something more suitable.

Thank you Eddienhp.  My former employer made some very, very bad decisions over the years and they have come back to bite management in the ass, over the last six months.  They're in my rear view mirror now as I'm looking ahead.  I would very surprised if they are still in business this time next year.

I have an interview with on Wednesday with a company called Ohio Health!  They're a network of hospitals and doctor's offices here in the central Ohio area.  I would love tp go work for a large corporation again - everyone knows their role, their job duties and there's room to move ahead.  At the small practice that I was let go from, there was none of that.  There would also be a lot more stability.    i have also been aggressively applying to Nationwide Children's Hospital, which has offices all over Columbus, and to the Ohio State University.  Wish me luck on Wednesday morning!

A little vent - my former employer also runs a school for kids and adolescents who have autism - my son attends the school and he can keep attending because the state pays the school $27,000 per year to educate him.   When I signed the severance agreement to leave the sister company, I was promised that no one at the school would know.  Today I went to pick up Jack and was greeted with "I'm sorry to hear that you lost your job".  This is irritating because I have lived up to my end of the agreement and somehow the news got out.  When someone in the company leaves, the news spreads like wildfire.  Just my rant.

Anyway, I also received a 'thanks but no thanks' letter form UHC today.  This day is frustrating.

However, I did receive a reply back from Ohio State that are interested in me and would like me to do a virtual interview with them.  Basically, I am recording myself on my computer answering questions and some one at Ohio State will decide if I move on to an interview with a person.  The interview will be done in my living room but I will need to dress as if I'm going to an interview.  This day has been frustrating and exciting.  Ohio State would be a great place to work!

I did both my Ohio Health interview and Ohio State digital interview today.  The Ohio Health interview went well and seems like it would be a good fit.  The billing office is not far from home.  The digital interview for Ohio State was a little nerve wracking as I've never done an interview like that before.  A first time for everything, right?😊 If this is how large corporations are going to screen employees, then today was good practice.  I have applied for other positions with Ohio State so hopefully those will work out if this one does not.  It'd be great to get into to OSU because, after three years of employment, I would receive 100% free tuition and my son would receive 50% off his tuition.  That would be a relief for me.

On the other hand, the lady I interviewed with at Ohio Health today stated that if I met my productivity standards for six months, I would be eligible to work from home.  That would be a great help as a single parent!

Tomorrow I have a phone interview with Hand Microsurgery Associates.  if you're in the Central Ohio area, this office is int he Polaris Parkway area.  I hope to have an offer soon.

Thank you to everyone who has read this chain.  Being unemployed is a common, but difficult position to be in.  Thanks for being my supportive listening ear!

I interviewed with Ohio State University Medical Center (the Wexner Medical Center to us locals)  yesterday - it went well, but a little nerve wracking.  I interviewed with five managers of three departments at the same time 😰.  Two of the three looked very promising - the third I just can't do because of being a single mom with a  special needs child.  The manager that escorted me out after the interview said that I did great.  I hope to hear good news in 4-6 weeks!  If I meet the protocols and standards, I can work from home 😊 that would be great!!!

I also have an interview with Mt Carmel next Monday afternoon and I have a state exam on Friday, October 5.  The state exam is for a Disability Claims Adjudicator position - both an exam and an interview if I pass the exam first.  I will also need to do a 5 minute presentation on why I word be an asset to that department.  Luckily I have three weeks to work on it.  Wish me luck!

My last employer is in my rear view mirror--

Alright - I want to keep all of you updated 😀  I've spoken with three recruiters this week - one for a hospital system, one for Aetna and one for United Healthcare.  I've got an interview with Aetna on October 2nd.  The United Healthcare recruiter was pretty impressed and stated that she will forward my information to the hiring manager, so I should be looking for an email with an interview date.  If I don't get into Ohio State, I would like to work at UHC or Aetna.  I know it sounds strange but I would love to be back at a large company again.  I worked at Anthem for five years and I took the ability to move around and advance my career for granted.  It was so nice to hear "perfect" from the recruiters this week as I spent the last six months on my job being told that I'd made a mistake on everything.

I'm feeling better about my future but will be ecstatic when I have an offer!

Today has not been good - I got a rejection notice email from Ohio State this morning but it's confusing me a bit.  I applied for a position called "Patient Access Coordinator" - basically getting the patient's insurance information and then benefits and lining up any payments up front, like a copay or deductible. This is something I've done for years.  When I interviewed last week, I did not interview for this position but for actually three other different departments with five different managers. I was told ahead of the interview that these managers would be interviewing every Thursday through October 4th, and to expect to hear something in early to mid October.  So I'm not sure why I would be receiving a rejection letter for this position, Patient Access Coordinator, that I never interviewed for.  The rejection email stated that so many applications were received for this position that choosing one was difficult and they decided to go with a more closely matched candidate.  I think that's jargon for going with an internal candidate.

I feel like I have failed and am back at square one again.  I have lots of other things going for me but I really wanted to work at Ohio State.

What they probably did was submit you for an additional position that was open even though you didn't interview specifically for it. This letter is a standard rejection letter that is sent to all candidates that didn't get the spot. You may still be in the running for the other spots you interviewed for.

I'd be willing to bet all rejected candidates get the same basic letter, regardless of whether or not the spot went to an internal or external candidate.

I don't know anything specific about how OSU does it, but many firms have internal candidates in mind for a specific spot when they post it. They may have a requirement that the position must be posted even though they are planning to offer it to a already known internal person.

It's maddening I know. :(

This week will be an exciting one!  I have an interview tomorrow afternoon with Aetna, an interview on Thursday afternoon with a radiology group and a exam with the state of Ohio on Friday morning.  I also heard from a recruiter at Anthem this morning - I listed myself as a 'rehire' on their application(s) and HR couldn't find me.  I'm hoping that means that Anthem is interested.  I worked for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield from 1999-2004 and would love to go back there again.

If I pass the interview for the state on Friday, I will be interviewed and need to give a 5 minute presentation on why I would be an asset to the state department - it's for a Disability Claims Adjudicator position, basically deciphering if a disabled person should receive state benefits.

Lastly,  I had my resume redone by a professional.  It looks so much better than what I could have put together.  I hope it will lead to a job.  😃
